If your home currently relies on oil or propane for heating, connecting to natural gas could save you thousands of dollars through FortisBC’s Connect to Gas rebate program. This incentive is designed for homeowners in existing houses who want to move to a cleaner, more efficient heating source, and the numbers make a strong case for acting soon.

What the Rebate Covers

When you connect your home to natural gas service and replace an oil or propane primary heating system with an eligible ENERGY STAR certified furnace, boiler, or combination heating and hot water system, you can receive a rebate plus a limited time bonus.

  • ENERGY STAR natural gas furnace or boiler: $2,000 rebate plus a $1,000 bonus, for a total of up to $3,000
  • ENERGY STAR natural gas combination boiler system: $2,800 rebate plus a $1,000 bonus, for a total of up to $3,800
  • P9 certified combination heating and hot water system: $2,800 rebate plus a $1,000 bonus, for a total of up to $3,800
  • Natural gas water heater addon: up to $800, when installed alongside an eligible furnace or boiler
  • Natural gas fireplace addon: $250, when installed alongside an eligible furnace, boiler, or combination system

Who Qualifies

This program is built for existing homes only, so new construction does not qualify. To be eligible, you will generally need to meet the following conditions.

  • You must be a new natural gas customer connecting to FortisBC service
  • Your home must currently be heated with oil or propane as the primary source
  • You must request a new gas service line and enter a service agreement with FortisBC within six months before installing your upgrades
  • Only one Connect to Gas rebate is available per appliance or system

How to Apply

The process has a few clear steps, and timing matters if you want the full bonus amount.

  1. Get a prequalification code from FortisBC before December 31, 2026. This has to happen before any equipment is installed, and the bonus rebate is limited, so codes may run out ahead of the deadline.
  2. Confirm your equipment is eligible before making a purchase. Costs from ineligible equipment are not covered.
  3. Hire a gas contractor licensed with Technical Safety BC to complete the installation.
  4. Submit your Connect to Gas application within 90 days of your paid invoice date, or by June 30, 2027, whichever comes first. Include your invoice, installation permit number, and the contractor’s license number.

Applications can take up to 90 days to process, so it is worth applying as soon as your installation is complete.

Why It Pays to Act Now

The $1,000 bonus rebate is only available while prequalification codes last, and installations must be completed with a paid invoice dated before March 31, 2027 to qualify. If you are already thinking about switching your home from oil or propane to natural gas, this is a strong financial reason to move up your timeline rather than wait.

If you are considering the switch, our team can help you understand your options, connect you with a licensed contractor, and walk through exactly what qualifies for the rebate before you buy. Reach out to us to get started.
